Thursday's Truths and Tidbits

As I was researching healthy alternatives to sugar and artificial sweeteners, I came across some interesting info on coconut sugar. I never knew any of this and am so anxious to try it! Did you know that coconut palm sugars are not only low on the Glycemic Index (35 vs sugar's 80), but they're also packed full of vitamins and minerals? Coconut sugar is loaded with B vitamins (12 of them!), minerals like iron, potassium, and zinc. It also has 16 of the 20 amino acids. This is some pretty darn healthy stuff! When's the last time you heard that about a sweetener?!

It also is loaded with inositol (127.70 MG/DL). Why is that important? Consider this. Research shows that inositol is beneficial for a variety of conditions:
  • depression
  • panic attacks
  • Alzheimer's disease
  • schizophrenia
  • diabetes
  • hardening of the arteries
  • cholesterol
  • hair growth
  • eye abnormalities
  • eczema
  • psoriasis
Taste-wise, it is said to have a caramel-brown sugar flavor and doesn't taste at all like coconut. Sweet. I can't wait to try it! Does anyone have an opinion about it?

Did you know that you should use only cold water when running your garbage disposal? Hot water can cause clogs if there is grease in the drain. Of course, this tip helps save you money because you're not using energy to heat the water and you're not stuck having to do baking soda/vinegar/boiling water rinse to unclog your drain!

Losing weight can save you money at the gas pump! So can clearing all the excess clutter from your car! You use roughly 2 percent more gas per every extra 100 pounds you haul around. So if you and your spouse are both overweight and lose a combined 100 pounds, you'll see your gas mileage increase! How's that for motivation?!

That's it for my truths and tidbits today.

Sharing miscellaneous stuff with you because I care ... about you and the environment,

Hana

  1. I have to admit, when I first read what you wrote about the disposal, I thought, "That MUST me a typo." But lo and behold, it's truth! I've been using hot water all this time! I told my hubs about it and he was surprised as well. Thanks so much for the tip!
