A Heart-healthy Giveaway

Disclosure: This is a sponsored post. I received products and/or compensation in exchange for this post. It in no way is to replace the advice of a physician.

Last year in February, my husband had a heart attack. It was mild and served more as a wake-up call. The fact is heart health is important and both men and women need to pay attention to it.

My father was 45 when he had his first two major heart attacks. The damage was severe and doctors believed he wouldn't make it to 50. Only 7 YO at the time of his first attack, I grew up to the sound of ambulances and hospital beeps. I feared walking into the house when his car was in the driveway because I knew he wouldn't be home unless he wasn't feeling well and I was afraid I'd find him dead on the floor. It wasn't a fun way to grow up.

Even after I'd moved 250 miles away, my own heart still stopped whenever I'd hear an ambulance, assuming it was my dad on the way to the hospital again. You see, he made it past his 50th birthday and all the way to his 62nd. In 18 years, he survived 13 heart attacks. We assume his 14th killed him.

I guess it was because of my experiences with my father that my husband's heart attack hit me especially hard. I'd already been widowed once, in 1989, and I wasn't prepared to walk that road again.

The leading cause of death in both men and women, heart disease claims the lives of more than 610,000 people each year in the U.S. alone. That's one in every four deaths.

On his last visit to the cardiologist, my husband received a good report. The doctor even took him off his blood thinner. Phew. Relief. The wake up call worked. My husband heeded the warnings and started taking better care of himself.

One of the reasons we believe the attack was minor is that Bill has always taken the right supplements, including lecithin, which keeps the cholesterol moving through the veins, and fish oil.

It's a fact that there is more scientific evidence between the cardiovascular benefits of fish oil than virtually any other nutritional supplement. In over 8,000 scientific studies, including close to 1,000 human clinical trials, the evidence has shown that EPA and DHA, the omega-3 essential fatty acids in fish oil, support overall cardiovascular function and reduce the incidence of heart disease. Even the American Heart Association recommends eating fish twice a week for this reason.

Research on Omega-3s for the Heart have shown to:
  • Support overall cardiovascular health
  • Optimize circulation and blood vessel function
  • Support a healthy heart rhythm
  • Promote healthy triglyceride levels
  • Support healthy blood pressure
  • Are natural and safe for long-term use
With concerns over environmental contaminants, eating fish is not always the best option, however. That's why supplementing your diet with high-quality purified fish oil makes sense.

We've been taking Nordic Naturals products for years. They are the #1 Fish Oil Company in the U.S. But they also understand the necessity of combining fish oil supplementation with a heart-healthy diet rich in whole, nutrient dense food, as well as the importance of staying active.

The company sent me THE COMPLETE MEDITERRANEAN DIET book by Dr. Michael Ozner to review. The book includes fantastic recipes that are not only perfect for someone concerned about their heart health, but also for diabetics like me. Dr. Ozner is a renowned and well-respected cardiologist. The traditional Mediterranean diet is clinically proven to reduce your risk of heart disease, cancer, and a variety of other diseases. Combined with the latest scientific findings in health and nutrition, Dr. Ozner was able to create an easy-to-follow and delicious diet. There are 500 classic Mediterranean recipes in the book. I especially like the desserts and the thumbs up for dark chocolate.

One of the interesting facts I learned from the book, is that people in Mediterranean countries tend to nap a lot, often taking short naps after lunch. A recent study revealed that doing this reduced the risk of death from heart disease by 37%! Let's hear it for the power nap!

The book also contains steps for stress reduction and exercise tips. It's really an amazing publication and the fine folks at Nordic Naturals want to give it away to one of you!

In addition to the book, THE COMPLETE MEDITERRANEAN DIET by Michael Ozner, MD, they're also including two of their outstanding products:

  • Nordic Naturals CoQ10 Ubiquinol (60 count Non-GMO Verified) provides 100mg of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) ubiquinol to support cellular energy production and cardiovascular health. Ubiquinol is the active antioxidant form of CoQ10, a fat soluble molecule found in nearly every cell, tissue, and organ in the body, which helps transform food into energy. It is ideal for people who may be deficient in CoQ10, or for individuals with cardiovascular conditions, those taking statin drugs, or for anyone over the age of 40 looking for extra antioxidant support.

  • Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega 2x (60 count Non-GMO Verified) features Nordic Naturals highest concentration triglyceride form omega-3 oil in a slightly larger soft gel that delivers 1000mg EPA+DHA per soft gel. Paws for Veterans... how rescued dogs are making a difference in the lives of veterans

Theo and me
My family has been blessed with the companionship of countless shelter pets throughout the years. Now that the kids are grown (our baby will be 29 soon!!), Bill and I are down to only two cats. I ended up being highly allergic to the last cat we adopted from the Humane Society, the sweetest long-haired black Manx who is now being treated like a princess in someone else's home. From dogs to bunnies to a slew of kitties, our shelter pets have brought so much joy into our lives.

My favorite pet of all time, however, is one particular cat who's lived with us for over six years now. Theo Van Gogh is a Siberian Forest Cat (although he was listed at the Humane Society as a Ragdoll), who is devoted to me unlike any other pet I've had. When I first saw Theo, he was curled up in his litter box in a cage. It wasn't until he looked up at me that I noticed he was missing an ear. This slightly cross-eyed cat, with too long fangs, and rough, greasy fur, won his way, first into my husband's heart, and then into mine.

The Van Gogh "brothers"

We already had a Ragdoll cat named Vincent Van Gogh, which, admittedly we purchased from a family who originally bought him from a breeder in Jamestown, New York. Because of my allergies, I am limited as to what kind of cats we can have. It didn't use to matter, but as I've aged, the allergies to cats grew stronger and now I have to be careful. Ragdolls are a good choice for those allergic to cats; as are Siberians.

After we got the Ragdoll, we renamed this magnificently beautiful cat Vincent Van Gogh. A year later, we started watching for another Ragdoll at the shelters, with hopes of adopting another one. That's when a cat named Gyro showed up in my search.

His fur isn't rough anymore!

As we were checking out this faux-Ragdoll, we started laughing as we realized we already had a cat named Vincent Van Gogh and we were about to adopt a one-earred kitty! So, we renamed him after Vincent's brother, Theodorus. It wasn't long before Theo captured the #1 spot in my heart.

Why am I telling you this? Oh yeah. Because I want to announce an upcoming contest I'm excited about.

Distributing to more than 35 countries, Nordic Naturals® offers more than 150 products in a variety of flavors and formulations, all in line with leading standards for safety, efficacy and sustainability. Read more about their amazing products on their website and follow them on Facebook and Twitter.

Nordic Naturals® offers two types of high quality fish oil for your pet companions:

  • Omega-3 Pet Liquid (which contains anchovy and sardine oil)
  • Pet Cod Live Oil (which contains pure Arctic cod liver oil)
These supplements come in 16 oz., 8 oz., and 2 oz. bottles, and the Omega-3 Pet product is also available in a soft gel delivery system. The pet products are guaranteed fresh for 90 days after opening, when refrigerated.

Why fish oil? For centuries, canine and feline diets consisted of unprocessed foods rich in EPA and DHA, omega-3 fatty acids derived from algae, plants, and fish. However, most of today's pet foods contain primarily omega-6 fatty acids from vegetable oils. Even the highest quality pet diets rarely contain adequate amounts of EPA and DHA. This results in an unbalance ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 that can negatively impact the health of our pets.

Nordic Naturals® is known for its freshness and sustainability. All products are purified for mercury and environmental contaminants and surpass strict international quality standards.

Don't forget to visit the Nordic Naturals® Facebook Page between 6/28 and 7/18 to submit your pictures! Looking forward to seeing lots of furry faces from the GG community!

While this is not a sponsored post, I will receive some lovely Nordic Naturals swag for posting.

Improving grades and behavior... without spending a fortune!

Have you heard about "smart fats?" Smart fats are thought to help with attention, learning, memory, behavior and higher test scores in children. Studies show that children who eat fish at least twice weekly have higher grades and test scores than those who don't. Of course, we're not talking highly processed frozen fish sticks, etc.

Feeding your kids fish is not the only way to take advantage of the consistent findings from a whole slew of research studies related to this. The key is supplying them with omega-3 fatty acids, or so-called "smart fats." Dr. Keri Marshall wrote a chapter in the book, Amazing Grades! 101 Best Ways to Improve Your Grades Faster, which included the following information:
  • Our brains are comprised of 60% fat with gray matter making up approximately 45% of total brain fat
  • Approximately 30% of the gray matter is made of DHA
  • Omega-3s make up a part of every cell membrane in your body
The logical conclusion from the above facts is that in order for the brain and nervous system to develop and function properly, everyone needs omega-3s and DHA. Dr. Marshall presented these findings:
  • Attention and behavior. Based on research from the University of South Australia, 132 children (ages 7-12) with ADHD who took fish oil capsules were "calmer, less impulsive, and showed improvements in attention, behavior, and vocabulary." Further study revealed that, after 5 months, "unruly children who took fish oil supplements showed improved behavior, concentration, and bonding, as well as the equivalent of nearly nine months' improvement in expressive language ability."
  • Grades and test scores. A British study found that 184 teenagers attending a school for the behaviorally challenged, who were given fish oil supplements for a period of 12 weeks prior to taking standardized tests, exceeded expected results by one full grade.
  • Learning and literacy. A study in 2007 of 355 children, ages 6-9, found that verbal learning and spelling ability improved in those who were taking fish oil supplements on a consistent basis. Additionally, these children retained information better and missed fewer sick days from school. In more recent years, another study of 90 7-12 year old kids with ADHD concluded that DHA supplements helped to improve reading and spelling, as well as reduced behavioral problems.
  • Memory and problem solving. Children whose moms included enough healthy fats while pregnant are destined to score higher on tests of memory function.

Vinegar Fridays -- Protecting our little ones from toxins

 TGIVF!

We're surrounded by chemicals. As a matter of fact, the U.S. currently has over 80,000 chemicals registered for commercial use. That's a whole heck of a lot more than were around back when I was a child in the '50s and '60s. Approximately 700 new chemicals are introduced in the States every year, and most of them have not been studied for their possible effects of child development. Doesn't that frighten you? It terrifies me. These are chemicals in common household products like
  • toys
  • furniture
  • shampoo
  • food
  • electronics
  • cleaners
  • laundry products
  • lawn care products
  • and so many more!
My concern for the welfare of your children is one of the reasons I started this feature on my blog, which eventually led to the book, Vinegar Fridays.

Common household distilled white vinegar can be used to replace nearly every cleaner in your home, and apple cider vinegar can be used for a variety of beauty and health-related things. Vinegar is just that amazing.

Of course, Green Grandma isn't the only one concerned! Healthy Child Healthy World is celebrating its 20th anniversary and plays a leadership role in one of the most important public health and environmental movements of the 21st century. HCHW is focused on empowering parents to protect children from harmful chemicals.

Following the death of five-year-old Colette Chuda in 1992, HCHW formed to help prevent other children like Colette from dying from cancers linked to environmental factors. HCHW is a national, nonprofit 501(c) 3 organization headquartered in Los Angeles, CA. Please visit their website for more information about the work they are doing to keep your children safe from toxins.

This month, through October, Healthy Child Healthy World is teaming up with Nordic Naturals® to convey an important message to families worldwide that it is essential that we protect our children from harmful contaminants by creating healthy environments where they can grow, thrive and flourish. After all, isn't that what we all want for our kids?

Nordic Naturals® is donating a portion of proceeds from selected Nordic Naturals® children's products to HCHW during its Back-to-School promotion. To help raise awareness about this vital issue, Nordic Naturals® is donating $1 for every bottle sold of the following products:
  • Nordic Berries -- chewy, sweet-and-sour multivitamins provide 100% of the daily value of the most essential nutrients
  • Nordic Omega-3 Gummies -- easy-to-chew omega-3 tangerine treats for ages 2+
  • Children's DHA -- chewable, strawberry-flavored omega-3s support brain and visual function for ages 3+
  • Baby's DHA -- omega-3s for babies 5-35 lbs. with a measured dropper for easy addition to formula or food
Nordic Naturals® is based in Watsonville, CA and is committed to delivering the world's safest, most effective omega oils to help provide the essentials of an extraordinary life. With over 150 products being distributed to more than 35 countries, the company's formulations are all in line with leading standards for safety, efficacy and sustainability. For more information on the company and their products, visit their website.

You can also follow what's going on with these two care-about-your-kids' companies by following them on Facebook (www.facebook.com/nordicnaturals and www.facebook.com/HealthyChild) and Twitter (@NordicNaturals and @Healthy_Child.

And, of course, you can follow Green Grandma and Vinegar Fridays on FB and Twitter as well. @TheGreenGrandma @VinegarFridays.
