Natural, Gentle, Safe, Effective, and Available at Target!

Disclaimer: I am a Hyland's Homeopathy Ambassador and receive various products and gift cards from Hyland's promotional partners at no cost to me. All views and opinions expressed on this blog post and corresponding social network mentions are my own and are not to be interpreted as medical advice.

I can't tell you how excited I am about the Made to Matter initiative at Target. Target chose a handful of companies to feature in this line... companies that care about the health of their consumers and the proven safety of their products. Companies like Hyland's. I have to admit, Hyland's is one of my favorite companies and I've known for years that their products truly are made to matter.

Hyland's is thrilled to be part of Target's Made to Matter program. Their homeopathic medicines are made with the highest quality natural ingredients and they've followed the strictest standards of preparation for over a century! There's something to be said for a company that's stood the test of time, don't you think?

Hyland's Teething Tablets (what family with young ones can live without these?!) were first mentioned in a company product catalog in 1925. There has been a lot of sore gum relief since then!

Founded in 1903, as Standard Homeopathic Pharmacy in Los Angeles, the pharmacy was bought by George H. Hyland seven years later when he started Standard Homeopathic Company. In 1923, Cecil Crag joined the organization and in 1940, he developed Hyland's Pink Aspirin for Children for his daughter, Marion. By 1947, the manufacturing "plant" outgrew the basement. Forty years later, J.P. Borneman, PhD. Chairman and CEO joined the company.

Jump ahead to the 21st century. In 2008, the company launched Hyland's Cold 'n Cough 4 Kids and Hyland's Nighttime Cold 'n Cough 4 Kids, products I think are must haves for families with children. After all, nearly every child, at one point or another, will keep parents up hacking and sneezing. In those cases, Hyland's spells RELIEF in a safe, natural, and homeopathic way.

In 2009, Hyland's moved its corporate headquarters to its current location in Carson, California. Two years later, they introduced Hyland's Baby Tiny Cold Tablets and Hyland's Baby Cough Syrup, making them the first major brand to offer cold medicines for babies (six months and up).

They updated their packaging just last year for the Hyland's Baby and Hyland's 4 Kids lines, and now you can find these products at Target in their Made to Matter section. Because, like I said, Hyland's products are made to matter. They're natural, gentle, safe, and effective. Believe me. I know. I've been a long time fan of Hyland's and will continue to be for many years to come.

A Canadian Backyard Habitat

Today, I'm thrilled to welcome award winning author, Lillian Brummet, as a guest blogger. In addition to writing 6 books, Lillian also produces and hosts the Conscious Discussions talk radio show, and manages the Brummet's Conscious Blog in partnership with her husband and business partner, Dave Brummet. The main focus of everything they do is to inspire hope in individuals, helping them realize the value of their efforts, and encouraging them to become more positive and proactive in life.

Lillian was happy to share her experiences with creating backyard habitats.

Recognition of farmers and gardeners who plant native and pollinator-friendly plants,
minimize tilling, use no chemicals (fertilizers, herbacides, pesticides),
and provide both water and habitat for a wide array of living beings.

Backyard Habitat

The Canadian Wildlife Federation has some amazing programs and how-to instructions that help people green their yards, roofs and balconies while creating diverse beauty and habitat for native and migrating creatures.  One of their programs is called the Backyard Habitat Certification that honors and celebrates those who have created a diverse backyard habitat with different types of landscaping, ponds, gardens, and trees that provide food or habitat for a wide array of organisms from bees, butterflies, birds, and frogs, to humans. Dave and I had the honor of being awarded this certification for our last property. When we purchased that double corner lot, it had been a rental for a long time to various people, some of whom were mechanics. When we looked into the history of the property we learned that many years ago it was also a repair yard for the railway at the turn of the century. On top of this, the earth was compact, rocky, and heavy clay. What little greenery that survived there was mostly weeds. While building a privacy fence around the entire property, we also created a 3-bin compost system in order to produce good soil.

The cedar fence panels were raised 2’ off the ground so we could run wire fencing along the bottom so the dogs could have a view, the neighbors could enjoy the flowers, and the landscaping could have air circulation and sunshine. Slowly over the next 5 years, we put mortared rock wall-lined raised beds surrounding the inside of this fence line, some landscaping outside in the grassy area between the fence and the curb, and 9 raised beds for our berry and vegetable garden. We then put in a small pond with a fountain and raised flower beds along the patio, carport, and driveway.

We focused on choosing plants that provided nectar or berries for a wide array of living beings and that would provide a constant supply of fresh flowers throughout the growing season. Another important aspect in our choice was placing deciduous shade-producing vines or trees on the areas of the house that got the most sun exposure for optimal energy savings. We also planted berries and herbs for our own consumption, installed 5 bird houses, a bird bath, and both a suet and seed bird feeder.

The home became a stunning park that anyone passing by paused to enjoy. The air was cooler and had more moisture than outside the property, which meant we had less energy costs and less dust in the home. We spent more time outside because the yard had become beautiful, quieter, and private, and the dogs had a better experience on summer days because they could seek out shade and water. We noticed increasing numbers and diversity of birds, butterflies, pollinators, and other insects. Frogs and dragonflies magically appeared with the installation of the pond and we always had a full freezer and pantry from the garden harvests.

After putting in so much time and passion into that property, it was difficult to leave as it was reaching maturity and the peak of its beauty. However, it was important for us to follow our dream and move to the Kootenay region of BC, Canada. Real estate agents often state that landscaping can add 15% or more to the value of your home - this is something we can attest to, and it did not take long to sell, due to the beauty of the yard and, evidently, the certification was also a selling feature.

We purchased a home in the heart of the Kootenays and, using what we learned from the last place, we began again. Because this property was not likely to have toxins in the soil, we were able to use the earth and sod that we dug up from various projects to layer in the 3-bin compost system. We’ve been here 4 years now and already have 7 raised garden beds. We started the landscaping including 11 shrubs, 9 trees, various flowers and herbs, and 2 bird feeders. Another year will see the completion of the landscaping – the final 2 raised beds for the garden, a pond, and bird, bat and butterfly houses to help attract them to the property.

It is important to note that the plants we’ve put in so far will help mitigate global warming - when mature, the trees and shrubs will absorb 1875 kg of pollution and release enough oxygen for 25 people every single year.

We learned from experience that creating diverse yards not only increases property value and inspires others; it also reduces energy costs, reduces dust and noise, and provides leaves for our gardens.

Award winning author Lillian Brummet produces and hosts the Conscious Discussions talk radio show, and manages the Brummet’s Conscious Blog. Although it seems like a lifetime of scribbles and notes have led up to this – Lillian has been professionally involved in the realm of writing since 1999. She began writing poetry as a teenager, which allowed her to express the issues and emotions from a broken home, abusive childhood, and being on her own at 13-years old. Through poetry she learned how to see beyond these hurts and discover a world outside of herself, where she learned that her life really did have value and that she had a purpose to fulfill.

Lillian has fond memories of an early childhood in California and Nevada (USA) and grew up in the south-central region of BC, Canada. Her business partner and husband, Dave, was born and raised in Kelowna (BC) where he met up with Lillian in 1990 and they have been together ever since. Dave and Lillian have collaborated their efforts and have authored of 6 books.

In those few stolen moments when she is not in the office, she can be found spending time with her husband gardening, indulging in nature, camping, and walking the many trails in BC’s (Canada) wilderness.

Asbestos, mesothelioma, and rose-colored glasses

This post is dedicated to my friend, Lorraine Jamrom, who lost her battle against mesothelioma at the tender age of 52. Her daughter, Bobbie, is a longtime member of the Green Grandma community.

Asbestos has been in the news recently due to the recent Capitol Building scare. It seems that, during asbestos removal (abatement) from the building, there was a potential release. So, what's the big deal and why is it a threat to those working in the building?

When I bought my house in 1991, I knew it had an asbestos roof that would eventually have to be replaced. After serving the house well for nearly 50 years, the time came for us to get a new roof. What we didn't understand was how much of a hassle that was going to be. It seems you can't just remove an asbestos roof and toss it in a dumpster. Nope. The guys working on the roof had to wear special protective uniforms and then the material, including their uniforms, had to be buried in a special place in Clinton, PA with folks from the government observing. Yeah, it was that big of a deal.

The asbestos roof in and of itself was not a problem. But once asbestos is broken up and the particles are released into the air, there is a huge problem. People exposed to these particles are at a risk for a life-threatening cancer called mesothelioma. Even if those airborne particles land on someone's clothing, others can be affected through second-hand asbestos exposure by simply touching the clothing. While men are four times more likely to be diagnosed with mesothelioma than women, more and more women are becoming victims through second-hand exposure. U.S. veterans are especially vulnerable, accounting for nearly one-third of the cases throughout the country.

The thing is, symptoms may not even appear until 30 to 60 years after the initial exposure. That fact is a bit scary to me because, as I wrote about in an earlier post, I grew up two blocks away from an asbestos plant in Manheim, PA. My mother worked in the office and other family members worked in the plant itself. Some succumbed to what we called, "asbestosis," a lung cancer that killed them.

My best friend and I spent countless hours playing in the creek that ran alongside the asbestos plant. We grew up breathing the asbestos-tainted air. While we're both fine now, it does make me wonder what is ahead.

Asbestos poses the greatest risk when it becomes worn or damaged, causing the fibers to flake off and become airborne. It can be found in many older homes, schools, factories, commercial buildings, and apparently, the Capitol Building in Washington, DC.

The fact is that no amount of asbestos exposure is safe. None. And mesothelioma disguises itself as a whole slew of other respiratory ailments, so it's often undiagnosed until it is too late. Nearly 3,000 people are diagnosed with this deadly cancer annually and are given an average of 10 months to live. Ten months! And yet, asbestos is still not banned in the U.S. Why?

During the month of July, concerned people like me are trying to get the word out and raise awareness of this deadly, yet preventable, disease. Won't you help us by sharing this post? Pin it. Tweet it. FB it.

The Mesothelioma Cancer Alliance website has tons of valuable information about asbestos and what exposure can mean for you and your family. Ignorance is not bliss, my friends. But there is hope. It's that very hope that carried Heather Von St. James from a grim prognosis of 15 months, to that of being a mesothelioma survivor eight years later! Hear about this brave woman's battle by watching the YouTube video below. Heather and her husband, Cameron, have a message of hope and they want everyone to not only hear it, but to embrace it.

"Don't take a death sentence as a diagnosis. There is hope."  ~ Heather Von St. James

So watch the video and then tell me, had you ever heard of mesothelioma before? If so, why? Has mesothelioma affected someone you love? Let's spread the word, folks. And the word is HOPE.

IOTUT -- 8 Surprising Uses for Breast Milk

It's Friday's Instead of This, Use This. This week, we're talking breast milk. And no, I'm not going to discuss formula, as in instead of formula, use breast milk. Rather, I'm going to fill you in on some unconventional uses for breast milk.

8 Surprising Uses for Breast Milk

Cosmetic

1.   Ever wake up with puffy eyes? Of course, you have. Especially if you're a mom with little ones (or teenagers). Instead of the expensive eye creams, just grab a couple of cotton balls, soak them in cold breast milk and rest for a few minutes with the wet cotton on your closed eyes.

2.   Adult acne? Yuck. Up until a few years ago, I still struggled through breakouts. I remember quipping, "There's something wrong with having zits and wrinkles!" Too bad I hadn't heard of this remedy beforehand. I could have saved some money on acne creams. Just wash your face with plain water or a mild cleanser and then apply breast milk to your skin. Allow to dry.

3.   Unsightly warts? Ditch the Compound W and apply breast milk to the wart twice daily until it falls off. It will take a few days, but it will happen. At least, that's what I've heard.

Infant Care

4.   Stubborn cradle cap? Apply breast milk to the scalp a few times a day until it's gone (the cradle cap, not the breast milk).

5.   Does your little one suffer from ear infections? Before you head to your pediatrician for a round of antibiotics, simply put  3 - 4 drops in the entrance of the ear canal (not directly in it) every few hours. Within 24 - 48 hours, the infection will be gone.

Health

6.   Sore, scratchy throat? Skip the lozenges and gargle with breast milk instead.

7.   Kiddo suffering from chicken pox? Breast milk applied to the itchy spots will not only relieve the itch, but it will help the sores to heal as well. Ditto for poison ivy/oak, insect bites, and rashes. Due to its antibacterial and antiseptic properties, breast milk is the perfect solution for itchy skin conditions. It's even been known to ease the pain and itch of shingles!

8.   Stuffed up? Can't breath? Relieve congestion by squirting some breast milk into your nostrils.

These are just a handful of options. If you're not currently nursing, ask a friend or family member who is to supply you with some small quantities of breast milk for immediate use or freezing. Breast milk will last up to one year in a chest freezer and about half that time in a freezer attached to a refrigerator.

Instead of antibiotics, ointments, and medications, just use breast milk. It's healthy, natural, non-toxic, and free (unless you have a greedy breastfeeding mama in your family who's charging for it!).

So, what have YOU used breast milk for?

Keeping it green and healthy with breast milk,

Disclaimer: I am not a medical professional or cosmetologist. These are remedies others have tried with success. However, it is always advisable to talk with your doctor or pediatrician before trying any home remedies.

Five Frightening Facts about Fracking

There are certain things I hate... things I believe are going to end up killing all of us if we don't do something about them. If you've been following GG for very long, you know I hate GMOs and companies like Monsanto that are producing and protecting them.

I also hate fracking. There are many reasons, but I thought I'd just share 5 of them today. These five facts are from Food and Water Watch.
  1. Water usage. As you know, many parts of the country are suffering from drought. Water shortages are a major problem in the US. So why are we allowing the hydraulic fracturing companies to continue to use millions of gallons of water per well, thereby depleting the earth of a valuable resource. Did you know that the fracking companies are even responsible for drying up streams in some parts of the country? It's inconceivable to me.
  2. Dangerous secrets. The chemicals used in fracking fluid are unknown to the majority of us. After all, they certainly wouldn't want to expose their "trade secret." Ridiculous! "Independent analysts have identified numerous cancer-causing chemicals that have been used in fracking fluid, and over a hundred that disrupt the endocrine system." ~ www.foodandwaterwatch.org
  3. Environmental law misuse. Big Oil & Gas is exempt from vital statutes in all the major environmental laws. Exempt! They don't have to play by the rules of the Safe Drinking Water Act, the Clean Water Act, or the Clean Air Act. And that, quite honestly, pisses me off.
  4. Flammable water. Yes, it is true. Despite the reports to the contrary, water affected by hydraulic fracturing is indeed flammable. Fracking shatters the rocks where the oil and gas is trapped, releasing hydrocarbon gases which can leak into aquifers and household water wells. Not only is it flammable, thus explosive, it's also making people really, really sick.
  5. The fracking race. The companies are in hot competition with each other. They're also racing to accomplish as much fracking as they can before the vast majority of the public comes to realize the danger involved. The companies are pushing to frack in every available nook and cranny -- including national parks and maybe even in your neighborhood!
For the sake of our children's and grandchildren's health and future, we have to speak up and take a stand against fracking. That's what I'm doing. Will you join me?

What can you do? Make your voice heard! Attend town meetings. Write/call your representatives in Washington. Write/call the president. And share this post. Informed people are dangerous people! They're the very ones who can, and will, instigate change. Let's do it!

Let your breastfed baby say it in style

Who's up for another giveaway? This time, we're going to go with two winners. How does that sound?

See this adorable shirt?

100% Natural Ingredients

My 14-month-old grandbaby was supposed to be a cooperative model, but she's decided that pictures are not worth the trouble of having to stay still. So excuse the fuzzy arms, which were flailing, and check out this shirt.

One Creative Mama silk screens her breastfeeding advocacy designs on baby clothing and and mom shirts. The t-shirt shown on the marvelous little Miss Marley Grace is a size 12 months. It is also available in 6 mo., 18 mo., and 24 mo. sizes and comes in a wide variety of colors.

In addition to baby Ts, you'll find an assortment of rompers, bodysuits, and bibs on the website. From my daughter, Jessica's experience, the t-shirt laundered well, using gentle baby-safe detergent and, of course, absolutely NO fabric softener in the dryer. There was no fading or shrinkage... just a clean, comfy shirt advertising her family's commitment to breastfeeding. Marley is still going strong at 14 months, even though Mama's pregnant again and feeling a bit worn out!

The beautiful ladies at One Creative Mama and A Mother's Boutique (which has a brick and mortar store nearby) are 100% committed to breastfeeding and supporting nursing moms. My daughter shops there regularly.

Like I said on Monday's post, summer is the perfect time for advertising your choice to live environmentally conscious lives. Cloth diapered babies do this without a word, but it doesn't hurt to top them off with t-shirts sporting positive messages for natural living, right? Just like little Miss M's doing here.

And just because I can't help showing off my youngest grandbaby, here are some more pictures of the squirmy little bugger:

The kind folks at One Creative Mama and A Mother's Boutique want to give away some baby clothes, so here's your chance to win. Two lucky readers will each have the opportunity to win the baby item of their choice (retail value up to $17.99). USA only. 18+.

Enter below on the Rafflecopter and good luck!

Disclosure: This contest will run through July 16, 2014 at 8:59 pm PST (11:59 pm EST). The winners will be chosen the following day and announced on Green Grandma. No purchase necessary.
