Recycle Caps with Aveda

When you throw your plastic bottles in the recycling can, what do you do with the caps? If you're like me, you toss 'em right in there with the bottles. That is, up until a few days ago when I found out that many recycling companies simply toss the caps in the trash and don't recycle them at all!

I was at the mall on Wednesday...which is not a common occurence for me, and I stopped by Aveda for some of their wonderful tea, a relaxing neck massage with their amazing blue oil and a bottle of shampoo. While there, I engaged in a rather lengthy conversation with the manager and learned even more reasons why I, and you, should shop at Aveda whenever possible. This is a company that truly cares, not only about the environment, but about so much more.

Which brings us to the plastic bottle cap issue. Aveda has a cap recycling initiative that puts these caps to good use.


The Recycle Caps with Aveda campaign is a program where the caps are repurposed into new packaging and they encourage schools to partner with them in this initiative.

So, the next time you're about to toss that plastic cap into the recycling bin, or worse, into the trash, don't! Stick a small bucket under your sink, or designate a canister on your counter (that's what we're doing) and start collecting caps for a better purpose. Then bag them up and tote them over to your local Aveda store or salon.

To be more specific, look for rigid polypropylene caps (often marked with a 5 in the chasing arrows recycling symbol):

• water bottle caps
• soda bottle caps
• shampoo bottle caps
• milk bottle caps
• carton bottle caps (juice, egg substitutes, creamers, etc.)
• flip top caps (ketchup, mustard, etc.)
• laundry detergent bottle caps
• peanut butter jar caps

Aveda does not take lids from prescription bottles, or flexible plastic lids, like you'll find on margarine or sour cream containers. They also do not take metal lids or plastic pumps/sprayers.
