Lead in Baby Food...what next?!

Sometimes you just feel like walking around in ignorance of things, don't you? I mean, really...everything seems to be dangerous these days. And now we have to watch out for lead in the foods and drinks we give our little ones. C'mon....this is getting ridiculous.

On June 10, 2010, the Environmental Law Foundation (ELF) issued a press release informing the public of the violation of California Proposition 65 Toxics Right to Know law, by a long list of well-known and trusted companies, including: Beech-Nut, Del Monte and Earth's Best. The charges indicate that the toxic chemical lead was found in the following foods and beverages: apple juice, grape juice, packaged pears and peaches (including baby food) and fruit cocktail. You can find the complete list here.

While the exposure to lead may be low in these products, the general consensus from scientists is that there is no safe level since lead accumulates in the body from repeated exposures over time from multiple sources. According to Barbara G. Callahan, PhD, DABT, of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, "Lead exposure among children is a particular concern because their developing bodies absorb lead at a higher rate and because children are particularly sensitive to lead's toxic effects, including decreased I.Q."

Of course, there is also an increased risk for pregnant and nursing women because lead passes from the mother to the fetus or infant. "Lead already stored in the mother's bone tissue," states Dr. Callahan, "is mobilized along with calcium, and additional lead exposure to the mother can further compromise the health of the most vulnerable among us."

Wasn't it bad enough when we had to worry about our little ones chomping on a lead-based paint chips? Then there was the concern about lead in our toddlers' toys. But lead in our baby food! Are you kidding me?

My question is: how and why did this happen?! The more I think about it, the angrier I become.

The bottom line here is that this information is too important to ignore! Take the time to read the list. The health and well-being of the little ones in your life may depend on it!

Trying to keep it healthy,

Hana
