Review it Wednesday -- Let's start off the new year with a little humor!

Have you visited the website Heard on the Playground yet? It's a great place to go if you're looking for a bit of daily clean humor. The collection of cute, funny, embarrassing, and sometimes downright inappropriate things kids say will lend a smile, and perhaps even a chuckle, to your day.

For those of us, like me, who like something solid to hold in their hands (we're talking books here, folks), there is good news. Heard on the Playground is now available in hard copy, in the form of an entertaining book by Andrea Sherr.

From the "About the Author" page:

I have a very talented family. My ten-year-old can make his butt "talk." My seven-year-old believes glue guns are a right and not a privilege. And my three-year-old is training to be a dictator by refusing to acknowlege the word "No." Being blessed with so many characters in one family means that each day is more entertaining than the next. Hoping I wasn't the only parent to give birth to The Little Rascals instead of The Brady Bunch, I started a website to collect funny kid stories, HeardonthePlayground.com. I was immediatedly overwhelmed by the response as shocking, embarrassing and hysterical stories about kids poured in from across the nation. I never thought topics such as peeing, now picking, sex, and even death could be so funny. I'm not just a Midwester Mom of three with two graduate degrees I never use with one husband who was convinced his children are destined to be circus performers. Now I am a woman with peace of mind who can look her husband in the eyes with complete honesty and say "Hey, lots of kids are like that..."

The book also includes kid art ... illustrations by Valarie, Zoe, and Rosie add charm to an already charming book!

All the entries in the book were gleaned from the countless submissions to the website. Here are some of my favorite:

My son came screaming out of the bathroom to tell me he'd dropped his toothbrush in the toilet. My son watched as I fished out the toothbrush and threw it in the garbage. He stood there thinking for a moment, then ran to my bathroom and came out with my toothbrush. He gave it to me and said with a charming smile, "We better throw this one out too 'cause it fell in the toilet a few days ago."  -- Anonymous, 5 -- Wisconsin

My niece, Jessica, was so excited about her new baby brother. She called her grandma (who had not yet seen the baby) to tell her all about him. Her grandma asked what the new baby looked like. She replied, "Oh Grandma, he's wrinkled and bald just like Grandpa."  -- Jessica, 8 -- California

Since it was around Christmas time, and I teach Sunday school, I decided to ask the class "Where is Jesus today?" Steven raised his hand and said, "He's in heaven." Sarah called out "He's in my heart." And then out of nowhere Michael blurted, "I know ... he's in our bathroom." The whold class got very quiet, and I was at a loss for words until I asked, "Why did you say that?" Michael replied, "Because I hear my Father get up in the morning, bang on the bathroom door and yell, 'Good lord, are you still in there?'"  -- Michael, 4 -- Pennsylvania

My son Aaron was two and a half. He said, "Dad, you wanna play with my cars?" I said, "Sure." He said, "O.K., I'll be the 'Cordavette' and you be the idiot who is driving too slow."  -- Aaron, 2 -- Colorado

And my favorite, of course, from the chapter on Potty Training:

I had been struggling with potty training my daughter for a while. One day, I was standing over her waiting for her to pee in the big potty, and suddenly that blessed sound filled the small bathroom. She looked up at me with a big smile, and said, "It's music to your ears, isn't it?" And she was right.  -- Bethany, 2 -- Pennsylvania

Yep, that's my Bethany, now the mother of Lincoln and about to face her own potty training challenges!
