BPA in toys -- how do you know?

I got an email this morning from a member of our GG community and she asked me how you can tell if there's BPA in children's toys. Excellent question! Unfortunately, I can't give a definitive answer. However, this was my response:

Unfortunately, most plastic toys made before 2008 contain BPA. It's hard to know for sure. The best option is to buy non-plastic toys. As the info about BPA has gotten to the public, more and more manufacturers are phasing it out of their toys, but unless the packaging is marked BPA-free, you just can't tell. Of course, you can ask store managers if they have any brands that are BPA-free or can call the manufacturers.

It's also important to avoid PVC and phthalate in toys as well.

Remember how simple life used to be?!

  1. More and more toys are being labelled "BpA-free", but if there is no label, there is no guarantee. BpA shows up in a lot of places - the lining of your milk carton (buy glass!), the lining of tin cans (buy fresh!) - and the regs in Canada don't have teeth yet, even though they were supposed to by now. Keep pressuring your MP's/senators; laws only get made because of the people, not the politicians, who feel A LOT of pressure from lobbyists!

  2. Thanks for this insightful comment, Sarah. I've done several posts about the dangers of BPA, but just never addressed the toy issue.

    Question -- what are regs?
